Pfizer and SEAOHUN Collaborate to Combat Antimicrobial Resistance

Bangkok, July 10, 2019: Pfizer Thailand and Southeast Asia One Health University Network (SEAOHUN), a regional consortium of 72 higher education institutions to advance One Health Workforce development, have joined hands with an intent to help address the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Thailand. The joint initiative will implement a series of interventions ranging from AMR stewardship, conducting educational and training programs to creating awareness around responsible use of antibiotics for healthcare professionals and communities within Thailand and SEAOHUN country networks.

Dr. Atchara Wongsaengchan, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation addressed opening remark on Thai Government Role on Higher Education toward AMR.

This collaboration aligns with Thailand’s National Strategic Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance including AMR surveillance and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) in humans, animals and agriculture, regulation on antimicrobial distribution as well as raising knowledge and awareness of AMR.

The partnership creates opportunities for Pfizer to enhance knowledge sharing and capability development through continuing medical education, information materials, and AMS implementation strategy. SEAOHUN will provide platform for educational outreach and multi-stakeholder engagement within SEAOHUN country networks to help enhancing knowledge and awareness on AMR.

Susan Silbermann, Global President, Emerging Markets, said, “We are committed to help protect patients across all stages of life and to fight serious, potentially life-threatening infectious diseases. At Pfizer, we believe we have a responsibility to do more than manufacture and provide access to antibiotics and vaccines. Working together with governments, universities, healthcare professionals, and the larger public health community, we recognize that we all play an important role in a collective effort to address AMR. Our collaboration with SEAOHUN underscores Pfizer's commitment to combatting the threat of AMR locally and globally.

Dr. Vipat Kuruchittham, Executive Director, SEAOHUN, said, “The partnership between SEAOHUN and Pfizer will further strengthen the capability of One Health professionals on AMR. We believe that a public-private partnership is a vital part of our mission to combat AMR in Thailand and the other Southeast Asian countries.”
