The Pfizer-PDA Positive Partnerships Project (PPPP): Micro Credit Loans

In partnership with the Population & Community Development Association (PDA), the Pfizer Foundation and Pfizer Thailand Foundation and Pfizer Thailand Foundation developed an innovative program of micro credit loans for people living with and/or affected by HIV/AIDS. With the grant in the amount of 12 million baht (US$300,000), the program established a loan fund for 11 PDA rural development centers in the north, northeast and central part of Thailand whereby healthy but economically needy individuals join hands with HIV/AIDS patients to star entrepreneurial projects with the interest-free money. Each group of two must agree to work together as partners and support one another, but it will be their choice whether to pool resources or to invest in separate business activities. The partners will select their options according to their skills and business opportunities. Examples of the activities include photo and picture frame production, home-made food, swine and chicken raising, candle making, laundry services, sewing cloths, internet café, recycled goods programs, and mushroom production. The focus is on activities that take a short time to give fruitful results, have low capital cost and resonate with the community. It’s even better now that we have friends that we ca start our careers together. We saw opportunity in computer graphic technology that can retouch pictures fro old to new. So, we use a “door-to-door” strategy and we visit villager and ask for their family’s picture. Once we get the original pictures, which usually are in very poor condition in black and white, or torn in half from improper storage, we have them fixed according to their requests. Some would like to have a colorful dress; others want it to look exactly like what it used to be but in improved condition. After the preparation, we frame the shot impeccably---they just love it. Our income is steady now and we believe with the income and amount of orders that are coming, we will be loan free within the next few months. This job makes us feel like we can do something. We have a future and it has given “life” back to us!” Nid said. Figure 2: PPPP-Micro Credit Loans in Mahasarakram “I am similar to most people who are living with HIV/AIDS. Tomorrow didn’t mean much to me. But once I stares the project with my grandmother to take care of the pigs, I feel like I have other lives to take care of. They have to be fed, they have to be bathed, they have to check up for their health, they depend on me. Life is more meaningful to me these days and I would jut like to thank everyone who has made this possible for us”, Joe said.
