Pfizer Thailand Foundation improves Care Home for Children with chronic diseases

114 June 2013 – Pfizer Thailand Foundation provided Bht 392,000 of financial support for the improvement of the Care Home for Children with Chronic Diseases at Srinakarin Hospital located in the compound of Khon Kaen University.  The initiative includes giving new paint to the home with well-known creative artist Chalit Nakpawan joining in making the atmosphere inside the place positive for patients’ physical and mental rehabilitation.

Assoc. Prof. Surapon Wiangnon, MD, the president of the Care Home for Children with Chronic Diseases, said, “The bed occupancy rate of Srinakarin Hospital’s children ward is very high.  We cannot admit 5% of patients for treatment as inpatients.  Since Srinakarin Hospital is the centre of chronic patients, especially cancer in children, therefore, we have child patients who come from many provinces such as Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan and Nongkhai as well as nearby provinces.

These patients have difficulty traveling over long distances.  So we have to find a temporary home for them, especially child patients with cancer and chronic diseases that have to get continued medical attention.”

The temporary home was inaugurated in January 2013.  It has served around 50 families of patients and is expected to provide accommodation for 10 families or 20 people each day.  In addition to giving them shelter, the hospital also has activities to impart useful knowledge to patients and their families by student volunteers from    Khon Kaen University.

“We hope very much that the Care Home for Children with Chronic Diseases will help minimize travel difficulty and expense.  And for the painting initiative,  it helps to bring smiles to the residents, which should make them feel better and at home.  We truly take a holistic approach to medical treatment,” Mr. Malherbe added.
