Providing a substantial grant of funds and technical and other support to the Ministry of Public Health in HIV/AIDS education.

hai Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) Pfizer Thailand Foundation provided a substantial grant of 6.85 million baht (US$ 171,300) and technical support to MoPH. Launched in June 2003, it is a collaborative project with the Bureau of AIDS, TB and STIs, Department of Disease Control and the Department of Mental Health. The objectives of the project are: 1. To train doctors and 400 community counsellors across the country to treat the mental health of HIV / AIDS patients. 2. To provide technical support and grant to develop HIV / AIDS MoPH website (www.aidsthai.org/care) ; this website will serve as a national HIV / AIDS learning resource and a channel for health personnel to consult and exchange information with AIDS experts. Lessons Learned Good ideas and intentions aimed at increasing awareness and prevention of HIV / AIDS aren’t always easy to implement, as it requires sustained collaboration, commitment and trust between all parties. But every little progress makes it all worthwhile. Recommendations The private sector along with foundations focused on science and public health support can play a very important role in augmenting government response to the HIV / AIDS crisis. It can provide support well beyond medical care. By the very nature of the private sector, it can provide innovation toward heightening awareness and prevention. And as the “micro loan” project has demonstrated, private corporations can reach out directly to those living with HIV / AIDS with innovative solutions that allow them to remain independent and self-supporting.
